For several weeks now, I've been receiving invitations to "Shelfari." I finally found a few minutes to procrastinate and checked the website out--and what fun it is! So I've invited most of the folks in my email address book and posted some of the books my reading group has read over the last few years.

And now, to my scheduled topic:
A couple of years ago one of my editor friends was attending the ICRS convention in Orlando. We were walking outside to the parking lot, and he asked me, "How can you stand living in this heat?" I laughed and said it was easy because we Florida folk generally don't step outside until October.
Got the following in an email and thought it hilarious . . . and all too true!
You know it's August in Florida when . . .
--The birds have to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground.
--The best parking place is determined by shade instead of distance.
--Hot water now comes out of both taps. (When I do a cold water wash, the clothes come out warm.)
--You can make sun tea instantly.
--You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.
--The temperature drops below 95 and you feel a little chilly.
--You discover that in July it only takes 2 fingers to steer your car.
--You discover that you can get sunburned through your car window.
--You actually burn your hand opening the car door.
--You break into a sweat the instant you step outside at 7:30 a.m.
--You realize that asphalt has a liquid state.
--The potatoes cook underground, so all you have to do is pull one out and add butter, salt and pepper.
--Farmers are feeding their chickens crushed ice to keep them from laying boiled eggs.
and finally--you know it's August in Florida when the trees start whistling for the dogs!

I wish could go back to Florida TO COOL OFF!!! Yesterday we were in the high 90's with a "feel like' of 105-106. Today the predicted high is 103 with a feel like of 110-112. This is Virginia - 4 states north of Florida. The first summer we were here I was complaining about the heat. People kept telling me I should be used to it, coming from Florida. My answer was I never got this hot in Florida. Oh, by-the-way, our ozone level is labeled "unhealthy."
Please Lord, when are you going to send me back to Florida?
Shelfari is a great place! Robin Hatcher got me started there, and I love it. Not only have I found new books to read, I've also remembered soem old ones I need to post.
One person has something like 867 books on her shelf! I only put the more recent ones, with a few exceptions.
But it's a great place to connect with readers, too. I told my book club about it last night, and they're all getting pages. :o)

Angie, I've been trying and trying to join Shelfari, and it won't let me! When I click "Create and Account," nothing happens. Don't know what I could possibly be doing wrong...

My hubby would love to sit in a sauna 24/7. When he has been in one, he radiates heat for hours, it seems. But then, I hate heat! And humidity.
I grew up in southern NJ where the humidity just drowns you most days.
Me, let me sit on an iceberg and I'll be happy. After moving from NJ to Minnesota 11 years ago, I seriously considered becoming a snowbird -- move to Barrow, Alaska, for the summer and back to the Twin Cites for the winter. Then global warming has made the Barrow temperatures make it up into the 50s and 60s and THAT'S TOO HOT!
LOL.
Now to go check out "shelfari." Sounds very interesting.
